Date: 1/5/98 3:12 PM Subject: s7-25-97 I write to express strong opposition to the proposed rule S7-25-97, the "Stockholder Gag Rule." This rule undermines any fairness and openness in the economic market. Stockholders, among which are myself and more and more individuals every day, have a right and a need to know about the performance of the companies in which we invest in the areas of fair employment practices, board composition, use of child labor, etc. For many of us, these are key aspects of our investment choices. You must not muzzle or censor stockholder initiatives to explore these issues in the key arena of stockholder meetings. The impact of this rule could be massive disinvestment by those of us who care how companies treat women, people of color, children and others affected by discriminatory employment practices. The marketplace must be as open as possible. -- Nancy M. Ryan Cambridge Women's Commission 51 Inman St., Cambridge, MA 02139 Tel: 617-349-4697 Fax: 617-349-4766 email: nryan@ci.cambridge.ma.us
