Mike Piwowar and Stewart Mayhew Appointed Visiting Academic Scholars, Office of Economic Analysis

Washington, D.C., August 12, 2002 -- The Securities and Exchange Commission's Office of Economic Analysis today announced the appointment of Mike Piwowar and Stewart Mayhew as visiting academic scholars for a one-year term. Currently, Piwowar is a faculty member at Iowa State University, and Mayhew is on faculty at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia.

Piwowar, 34, joined OEA in July 2002, as a visiting academic scholar. He holds a doctorate in finance from the Pennsylvania State University. Piwowar's primary areas of interest are market microstructure and corporate finance. His research has been presented at national conferences and published in the Journal of Financial Markets.

Mayhew, 35, joined OEA in August 2002, as a visiting academic scholar. He holds a doctorate in finance from the Haas School of Business at University of California, Berkeley. Mayhew works in the area of option pricing, volatility estimation, and the microstructure of option and futures markets. He has published articles in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Futures Markets, and the Financial Analysts Journal, among others.

While at the Commission, the two academic scholars will provide the analytical and technical support necessary to help the Commission understand and evaluate the economic effects of its regulatory policy. As part of their duties, they will conduct independent research and analysis in areas concerning the microstructure of equity, derivative and debt markets.
