Restructuring of Web Database

The Securities and Exchange Commission is in the process of restructuring the SEC EDGAR Internet information. This restructuring is meant to improve both the update processes and the searches for the EDGAR information on the website. After the restructuring is finished, the database of EDGAR filings on the website will be organized by year as well as by registrant (that is, the company or fund).

Note that members of the public who access EDGAR filings directly from the search tools on the website pages will not notice very much of a difference, unless they examine the URL (address) of some particular filing (see the description below for details). Such website users need not concern themselves with the technical description that follows unless they have a particular interest in the matter.

However, EDGAR data users who retrieve filings with the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) will need to be aware of the new structure to access the filings that they are seeking.

New Index Structure for the EDGAR Internet Database

The restructuring of the SEC EDGAR Internet database enables us to ensure that filing information is available. It eliminates the possibility of a recurrence of the problems that have occurred in the past, when the number of registrants exceeded the number of subdirectories allowed in a single directory on the server, and thus we became unable to add new registrants to the website database.

The changes are in the following areas:

  • All filings will be separated by year.

  • All registrants will be separated by the first two digits (digits 1 and 2) of the 10-digit (leading zeros are included) Centeral Index Key (CIK).

  • All registrants will be subdivided by the next four digits (digits 3 through 6) of the 10-digit (leading zeros are included) Central Index Key (CIK).

  • All registrant filings will be separated by all significant digits (leading zeros are not included) of the Central Index Key (CIK).
This redesign permits the SEC Internet site to accommodate filings for more registrants. Below are samples of the same information in the old index format and the new index format.
