As a retiree and a retail investor, I watched in horror during the past year as half of my life savings disappeared. I was outraged to learn, after it was too late to get out of the market, that the traditional constraints on short sellers had been trashed in 2007, thus allowing short sellers to accelerate the destruction of the value I had built during 33 years of working and saving.
