The owners (stockholders) of a company need to understand the ratio of executive pay to median employee pay plus see a list of the types of compensation provided these executives. Executive pay is no longer two or three multiples of a nonexecutive employee's pay but can be thousands of times higher. Because compensation is so great for these personnel in many large corporations, this information may be even more important to investors than standard information provided in an annual disclosure.
Of course, individuals receiving extraordinary compensation would rather avoid publication of the information. The SEC must resist pressure from corporate lobbyists to not implement this rule.
