I agree that raising the accredited investor thresholds would be counterproductive to the U.S. economy.  I believe the SEC should refrain from increasing these thresholds and rather embrace the positive potential from increased small business startups.

I understand the concern of protecting potential investors but isn't regulating them out of the market is like stopping children from learning to ride bikes for fear that they'll fall?

No matter what you do there will be criminals. Penalizing honest business people won't make that go away.
